Extra money

It's nice to have a bit of extra cash. Every once in a while, we like to earn a little extra money in order to pay for a vacation, buy a new toy, or lessen the pinch from an unexpected expense. This last winter, I ebayed some items in order to drum up some spending money for our January vacation (with the added benefit of getting some junk out of our house!). Right now, Mr. Savvy is working the occassional Saturday or weeknight for a friend of ours, with the money earned earmarked for some new hunting gear. The ad revenues from this blog, as well as the interest from our 0% balance transfers, is helping to fund some home improvement projects this spring.

None of this generates more than a couple hundred dollars a month, but it all adds up. I'm sure some of you have creative ways of making extra money... what do you do on the side?

I used to be a wedding photographer on the side, doing 15 weddings in a year. The stress, however, got to me and I wasn't enjoying that so I've decided to try to get jobs doing portraits of families etc. A lot less is on the line this way.

That extra money really adds up. I was able to support myself while in between biotech positions.

I do E-bay. I used to work for a temp agency, and asked only for catering jobs. Those came up every few weeks, and were good for about fifty bucks.

I can't wait to hear what others say- I am currently looking for ways to earn a little extra!

I teach physics classes for Kaplan Test Prep. The money is good, the students are motivated, and management is very helpful. The teaching is not regular, but comes in spurts and is good for flexibility.

I do online surveys, mainly from one place. I get $5 a survey, and I probably take 2 to 5 a month. Which I know is not a lot, but it does help. Also I have the sharebuilder CC, so we earn cash back that goes into our money market account so that we can buy more stock, which is cool.

In another life, in another country, I worked nights at a motel. I made sure it is a safe area of town. The hours were horrid (10:30 pm to 7 am) but at that time it was ideal for me. The work I had to do was ~45 mins (balancing some accounts) then I had the whole night to myself to sit and do whatever I wanted. Not many customers came in at night (maybe like 1 or 2) and this gave me a chance to work on assignments, hunt jobs, read. Whatever.

I have a regular babysitting gig once a week, for approx. 3-4 hrs each time. I am currently in touch with a couple looking for a regular babysitter Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 5-9. The weekend hours suck since I won't be able to hang out with friends then, but that will give me extra $100 a week.

My goal is that if I do get that weekend gig, to live off of just my babysitting money besides rent. I figure $500 a month for going out and groceries for one person is enough. This way, most of my money from my actual job will go to my savings.

focus groups. my next one will pay me $200 cash for 45 minutes of work -- and they feed me. for this one, I am an expert investor. they put you in a room with other folks and a two-way mirror, ad geeks stare at you while you pontificate over crap you have no idea about. great deal.

I work part time as a Pampered Chef Consultant. 2 nights a week I teach cooking shows and make about $175-$200 for 4-5 hours work. It's been a great supplemental income source, as well as and outlet from from 9-5 job!

I'm working to build it to a level that replaces my full time income!

I provide respite care for developmentally disabled young men. Week ends, at my home. Complicated licensing and class requirements in order to stay current, but a job I can do at home.

I wouldn't really call it creative, but I do contract programming work for extra money. It's pretty easy work, but not steady. Some months I make $0. Other months I make $1000.

I've been selling antiques and vintage clothing on ebay. It does take time to hit the garage sales and thrift stores take well lit photos, and keep the webpage designed. It pays well and has been bringing in some extra cash on those months when I am really coveting that item that would make me go off my budget.
