I'm finally getting around to...

... sending in my checks for our CSA shares this year. What began a couple years ago as a half share at a local veggie farm has grown into a full share, plus a fruit share, as well as a goat cheese share at their sister farm. It's embarrassing to admit how much this all costs, but it is so worth it. I'm already looking forward to garlic scapes, heirloom tomatoes, squashes, and the wonderful, wonderful varieties of garlic we will receive (as well as at least a hundred other vegetables). They have a pea pick, a roma tomato pick, and a pesto festival as well... my mouth is watering already!

In the last couple years, we've moved from relying almost solely on grocery stores for our food, to purchasing our meat from local farmers (and having it butchered at meat lockers), buying produce, when we can, from local farmers, buying almost all our wine and most of our beer from local vineyards and brewers, and even buying eggs from a neighbor and bread from a retired couple that bakes it in an outdoor brick oven they built themselves. The cost in dollars hasn't gone down, but the environmental costs are much lower, and the quality is MUCH higher.

That's so wonderful! We bought a farm share for the first time this year, and I'm really excited to start buying local foods.

How did you go about finding a good source for local meat? The only butcher shop I know of around here is at the big chain grocery store.

ellen - we buy the cow straight from the farmer, always someone we know. We typically split it four ways. The farmer takes it to any number of meat lockers... there's a meat locker in almost every Midwest town, no matter how small.

Meat lockers, hmmm? I'll have to see if I can find any 'round here on the East Coast. Or maybe I should start cultivating friendships with farmers. :)

Thanks for the tip!
