Rate chasing, net worth, and Freecycle isn't always as good as it seems

Even though I swore of rate chasing about a year ago, I decided to open a new online savings account with FNBO Direct to take advantage of their 6.0% APY. I've heard from others that their application process was grueling, but I really didn't think it was too bad. I've been annoyed with Emigrant lately, mostly because of their newly restrictive transferring rules, as well as for their buggy UI.

I also just recently updated our net worth (see right sidebar). Up ~$3,000 this month. Not good at all, we spent too much. We did have some out-of-the-ordinary expenses this month, like 1/4 steer (~$500), a plumbing problem (~$800), half our CSA share (~$400), new furniture (~$1400), and some work on Mr. Savvy's truck (~$600). We are starting a new savings plan this month, so wish us luck.

I just had my first crappy Freecycle experience. I responded to someone's fairly vague wanted ad, and got back the rudest, most judgmental response ever. Apparently the person was looking for very specific items, particularly for resell. He asked why he should take HIS time to pick up our FREE items when he couldn't sell them for anything. It really pissed me off.

Wow...he's an idiot. Why did he even respond??? Wait...don't answer that. This guy deserves not a minute more of anyone's time.

Wow, that sucks. Even when I wasn't able to get anyone to pick up my broken washing machine, I still got a couple of polite tips on how to fix it.

(We had already bought another one, and I didn't see how repairing a 20+ year old machine was going to get me any closer to my wife's goal of getting it off our patio.)
