I *love* my new clothesline!

I have two loads of laundry out on the line right now, with room for one more full load. I have two three surprising observations...

1. Clothes dry REALLY fast on a clothesline. I thought it would be an all-day thing, but almost everything is drying in less time than it takes my dryer to dry a load. And this is in humid Wisconsin and it hasn't even been windy.

2. My basement is much less humid. This benefit never occurred to me, but it is a huge improvement over the typical humidity increase when we use the dryer. I remember how humid my last house used to get why we dried clothes, we had a laundry room off the kitchen and it would make the whole house miserable in the summer. The air conditioner had to work extra hard to remove all that humidity.

3. It hardly takes any time to put the clothes on the line. Eight-ten minutes per load, tops, and maybe five to take them all down.

An added bonus, my kitchen towels are whiter than ever!

I'm also kind of excited about those big-laundry weekends (you know, when you wash curtains, blankets, comforters, etc) and usually the drying time is the critical path that makes the task take all weekend. Now I can put three loads on the line and continue using my dryer and cut the total laundry time in half, maybe less.

I'm using my line today too. So many benefits from a clothes line - dryers are only needed in our very cold winters. :-)

* Where do you get all the energy to do all that work?
* From the way you describe it, keeping house seems to come naturally to you. Would you attribute this to genetics or to your upbringing?

@anon - Housekeeping most definitely does not come naturally to me! Throwing a load of laundry on a clothesline is simple and, like I said above, only requires a couple minutes. The payoff in sweet-smelling laundry is worth it!

You might want to be careful putting too many clothes on the line at one time. We had a similar umbrella line, and if we weren't careful, the whole thing would just collapse down. That's a real pain to get back up again...

You're right--the big stuff is a breeze to dry outside. I could never wash my down comforter so often if I couldn't dry it for free.

I dry large items on our soccer goal in the back yard, since our clothesline isn't sturdy enough for bedspreads.

My girlfriend keeps suggesting we give a clothes line a try. I was unsure but maybe it is worth a shot. Nice site, considering checking out my site and adding me to your Under 30 Blogroll...

...Thanks and keep up the great content.
