Networth Update!!!
| It's a few days early but it's been so long since I published a networth update that I wanted to get one out while I had a chance... It's been a good six months. Mr. Savvy's been working a lot more than he did last year, his industry is starting to pick up..... however he was told last week that he may not be working at all in July. We'll see what happens. We still work on limiting our spending. I'm in total declutter mode, so we are getting rid of a lot more than comes in, which is nice. I haven't been selling a lot, opting instead to give it away for the tax deductions. I just want it out of the house/garage/basement/yard/porch/attic. We have a second baby on the way, expected in early winter. It's very reassuring to know that we don't have to buy much for this one since he/she is due just a month after our first child's birthday. We have plenty of seasonally-appropriate clothes (although most are pretty boy-ish, so if this is a girl we might have to buy some stuff eventually), we already have slings and a co-sleeper, we will re-use our cloth diapers (which I'm thrilled about!), and I will nurse again (and I already have a good pump and we have bottles for daycare). We will have to pay for more daycare, and probably up the 529 contribution amount, but we'll manage. One thing we found out recently is that the eight-year-old roof on our house needs to be replaced. It was a complete tear-off and re-do that the previous owner had done in 2001, but the company that did it put the shingles on incorrectly. They are literally blowing off now. We have no recourse against the company that did the work, and we are looking at another complete tear off. No idea what it will cost. Our networth is starting to creep back up. We've been making progress on debt and maintaining our consistent contributions to our retirement accounts. Houses in our neighborhood are selling for pre-burst amounts. Cash versus Credit Card: -19,383 (Jan 2009: -29,294, up $9,911) Retirement: 146,657 (up $29,862 from Jan 09) Real Estate Equity: 84,939 529: 4,640 Random Stocks: 1,922 Total: 218,776 (up $44,504 from Jan 09) Labels: net worth |

post a commentCongratulations on both family and financial fronts!
Sounds like things are going about as swimmingly as possible.
Sucks about the roof, but congrats on the rest. Does that put about 2 years between baby #1 and baby #2? We've got 18 months between our two kids and so far (oldest is almost 3) it has had its ups and downs but on the whole I think it has been nice having them relatively close in age.
Nick - yes they will be about two years and one month apart. I think having kids close in age is nice too, they can enjoy more activities together... of course all that togetherness also means more competition and arguing, but that's part of growing up :)
I'm still in semi-denial about the roof. I haven't started getting estimates yet... maybe there will be a hail storm and insurance will pay for the new one?
what is your plan for the CC pay off for the garage? I see that you postponed the pay off 2 years, is anything happening with the interest rates?
Amaranta - we postponed the payoff simply to make it more realistic. When we made the initial plans we weren't paying for childcare or putting money in a 529, we didn't plan for unexpected expenses like the house repairs we did last year ($7,000+) or the car we bought when we had Baby Savvy ($7,000), and of course we didn't know Mr. Savvy would be out of work for a year.
The entire balance has been at 0% since the garage was built in January 2007 and is still at 0%. We plan to keep it that way... as the total balance goes down it will keep getting easier to find 0% offers that cover the amount.
Congratulations! How does a second baby impact your plans to buy a Honda Fit? We are expecting our second this fall and as a one car family, our VW Golf just wasn't going to cut it space wise. I love the Fit, but it just wasn't big enough to fit (ha ha) two car seats in back and my 6'5" husband in front so we went with a Subaru Forester instead.
We still want the Fit. It's a big step up from our two-door Civic, size-wise. But we are holding off trying to get some more debt paid down.
We're also considering a four-door Civic. Not as fun as the Fit, but it has its benefits. We really need something fuel efficient, even if we are crammed in.
We've got a 4-door civic as our only car and it works fine for us. The two car seats (well one is a booster now) take up almost all of the backseat, so we can't really handle any other passengers but that's the biggest issue we've run into.
