10 important Tips for Safe and Secure Online Shopping - Part II

Trust you found the first 5 tips on safe & secure online shopping resourceful. Here’re the next set of tips, which implemented properly would certainly help you beat Internet fraudsters and tricksters.

(... contd from Part 1 )

6. Payment system: Beware of sites which ask you to make ONLY wire transfers. Most reputed e-tailer’s would never do that. Fraudulent sites would entice you to make wire transfers in lieu of hefty discounts or lure you with complimentary gifts. Please do not fall for such traps. Genuine sellers in all likelihood sport transparent payment gateways.

7. Avoid public PC’s / Networks / Wi-Fi: For ultra safety best make purchases using your home or office network, PC ( includes laptop and other devices ). Do not make transactions over free Wi-Fi networks or some shady Internet cafe. There could be hidden traps to rob your credit card information. So, watch out.

8. Consider Virtual Credit Cards, payment services: Many Banks offer virtual credit cards, you can make use of them to avoid exposing your actual CC details. You can also consider online payment platforms such as PayPal, they are in the business of providing safe and secured online transactions for ages.

9. Do Not Tell All

No online shopping store ( barring travel sites ) needs your Passport number or your Aadhar Id number to do business. However, if fraudsters get them, along with your credit card number, they can do a lot more damage then one could imagine. Most genuine websites would ask for your contact details ONLY, once you fill that it would guide you to a payment system which is protected. Remember, the more personal information the website is trying to garner the higher the risk and lot easier it is to steal your identity. Wherever possible, give the least amount of information.

10. Install an Anti-Virus or Anti-Malware

Just like charity begins at home so does safety. Please make sure you install an Anti-Virus or Anti-Malware software. Fraudsters have gotten smarter, they understand it is easy to trap innocent buyers directly from their PC/Laptop than lay traps in form of a fake website. So, make sure you’re using a branded and latest Anti-Virus program. It costs some money but a worthy investment against hazardous attacks intended to steal your identity.

When you understand the potential pitfalls involved with online shopping and have implemented the suggestions above to avoid falling prey, shopping online can be a safe and rewarding experience.

10 important Tips for Safe and Secure Online Shopping - Part I

‘Online shopping’ as most customers prefer to call it, is fast becoming the No.1 choice for time crunched citizens. Today, there's every reason in the world to shop online. The discounts are hard to ignore anymore. Bargains( Deals ) are getting sweeter by the day. The assortment of products are mind-boggling, for instance Junglee.com offers thousands of products. The Shipping is quick. Customer service is brilliant in most cases. The shopping is secure, well almost. And that brings us to the very purpose of this post - Safe and Secure Online Shopping.

With every good comes bad. Naturally an industry which is clocking about Rs 50,000 crores attracts phishing attacks, credit card thefts, scores of malware ( Rouge code to compromise privacy features of a website ) and many other hazards. So the big question most shoppers ask is ‘How safe is Online Shopping’?

As an e-tailer myself it is hard to accept but Yes! I agree online shopping isn’t 100% fool proof however, here are few simple tips & suggestions which implemented properly can guarantee safe and secured online shopping.

1. e-tailer’s Reputation: For one’s who are new to online shopping, it’s highly recommended to shop from reputed e-tailer’s, even for the frequent shopper it is better to stick with the well known portals. Make a list of top 5-10 online retailers and try to stick with them unless and until you’re looking for something niche. So, in simple terms do some research before you shop online. Ask your friends, read online reviews, call the helpline. simple right.

You can also follow this simple checklist to verify an e-tailer's reputation?

1.1. Check the quality of content in the website?
Often Fraudulent websites will have inferior content with grammatical and typo errors.

1.2. Check the frequency of changes of products done in the website ?
Reputed websites are mostly dynamic, they keep updating their catalog regularly.

1.3. Check the quality of product description ?
Again point mentioned #1 holds good. Also in shady websites partial or no product description in available.

1.4. See if there are genuine Customer Testimonials ?
Beware of high sounding and overtly appreciative words, most likely to be fake testimonials

1.5. Check Alexa ranking of the website and see if this is a good traffic generated website ?
Visit www.alexa.com, type the e-tailer’s website and check the rank, Lower the better.

1.6. Check for reviews on other websites ?
Sometimes you need to judge it carefully because certain review sites contain false reviews which are basically posted to malign the e-tailer however, it is good to read reviews.

1.7. Follow on Social Media?
It is a good idea to follow the brand on the social media platform like Facebook, Twitter etc.
Most reputed online shops are active on Social Media. Plus this allows you to interact with other buyers.

2. Look for security certificate:

When you visit a online shop, If your browser returns a security warning that the ‘website you are visiting does not have a security certificate’, be on high alert. But you should also get familiar with who is issuing the certificate. There are several reputable certifying authorities, most notably VeriSign. These certification logo’s can be usually seen in the payment gateway page i.e, the page where you’re about to pay for your purchase, so check the logo on the website that reveals who grants the certificate and proceed further.

3. Customer Service

Once again a very important component to safe & secure online shopping. Try and see how the customer service is, if they have live chat or phone support ( Most reputed e-tailer’s have 24X7 ) then give them a call or chat and see what kind of response you get. Reputed companies have a comprehensive support system this should help you settle your nerves before you make a purchase.

4. Contact Us / About Us page

Go visit the ‘Contact Us’ or ‘About Us’ page. e-tailer’s who do not mention physical address, phone numbers, email etc of their organizations should not be trusted easily simply because, in case they fail to deliver your merchandise how or whom do you contact to recover your money? Please make sure you check the details, make a call, gain some trust and eventually place an order.

5. Check for Return Policy

Almost all top online shops have an extremely well defined ‘Return Policy’. This is applicable if you receive damaged or faulty goods. Check this policy, if this is not defined clearly then it is not a good idea to buy from that shop. Remember, a good e-tailer will ensure you get the best value for your money.

CBAZAAR goes Metro

A week ago Microsoft launched the preview of its upcoming Operating System (OS) - Windows 8. In case you haven’t seen the video yet, take a quick look ( roughly 1 min )

( Curious to know more? watch the entire product demo here )

You might have noticed in the preview video that Microsoft has done away with the ‘Start’ button and ‘icon’ oriented OS to a classy looking, ‘Metro style’ interface ( that is what they call it ). I am really looking forward to this ‘app’ based OS, at the outset looks stunning.

The Metro interface will feature a tile-based Start screen similar to the Windows Phone OS. Each tile will represent an application, simple isn’t it? Barring the standard ‘Metro-Styled’ apps which come along with OS, the rest has to be bought from Windows Store, called ‘Metro app store’ ( Right now all the apps are FREE ). Microsoft built its own store late last year to strengthen its mobile platform and now it seems will be extended to their latest OS. * now that’s a really smart move *

Before you start wondering why is an e-retailer going gung ho over a new OS, here’s the reason why - Last week, Computerworld, a reputed IT magazine had done an exclusive story on the launch of Metro app store for Windows 8, CBAZAAR was prominently featured in the article since it’s the ONLY app under the ‘shopping’ category, this also makes CBAZAAR the World’s 1st shopping app built exclusively for Microsoft Windows 8. Infact we along with NDTV and indiatimes are the sole “Indian” Metro apps currently listed in the store and that makes it even more special for our team.

CBAZAAR’S entry into Metro app store was also covered by our very own moneycontrol.com, read the entire article here, the story had originally featured in Network 18’s technology portal, tech2.com.

We at CBAZAAR strongly believe that mobile will be the next big platform for e-commerce hence, as a strategic move to facilitate and improve shopping experience for our customers CBAZAAR has decided to make itself available across various platforms and devices. Metro app is our first significant step in that direction. We will be rolling out apps for Android and Apple pretty soon, so watch out this space for more information.

For now, it is moment to cherish for Team CBAZAAR and I sincerely hope customers would love our app.
